What is the G1 test?

The G1 test in Ontario is a written exam based on traffic signs and road rules in the province. It is one of the three tests and the only written test that you will need to pass to obtain a complete G license. The remaining two tests are in-vehicle road exams.

Eligibility for getting a G1 license in Ontario

To apply for a G1 license in Ontario:

  • You must be at least 16 years old.
  • You need to pass an eye exam.
  • You need to pass a written exam.

Getting your paper G1 license

After passing the G1 test, you will be given a temporary G1 license. It will be a paper license that will be valid for 90 days until the province mails you a plastic driver’s license with your photo and signature.

G1 license conditions

A G1 license in Ontario has high restrictions and you should be knowing about all the rules. If you violate any of the rules, you can be faced with a license suspension and a fine. A G1 license holder needs to follow these conditions:

  • Driving with zero blood alcohol level.
  • To drive only with a G licensed driver on the passenger seat with a minimum of 4 years of experience.
  • All passengers wearing a seatbelt.
  • Driving is prohibited on highways unless accompanied by a licensed Ontario driver.
  • Driving is prohibited between 12 am and 5 am.

G1 license restrictions

The G1 license conditions and restrictions ensure that you learn to drive safely and gain good driving experience. If you are convicted of breaking any of the graduating license rules, you might have to face serious consequences.

  • On your first violation, your license remains suspended for 30 days.
  • On your second, it will be suspended for 90 days.
  • On your third, you will lose your G1 license which means you will have to start over again, retake all tests and pay the fee again.

A G1 license is valid for one year within which you can pass your road test and improve your basic driving skills.
