Your Guide to Avoiding a DUI Conviction

driving under the influence

One of the things that people fear the most is a driving under the influence charge and conviction. This crime has some pretty hefty consequences and the sting of it can follow you for the rest of your life. Thus, it is important to know how to avoid the possibility of getting pulled over for this offense in the first place and what to do if you are. Here are the top guidelines to follow:

Understand How Breathalyzers Work

As you may or may not be aware, DUI impacts citizenship – if you are applying for such a process, you need to be extra careful that you aren’t pulled over. This is why it is important to understand how the Breathalyzers that the police use work.

Contrary to popular belief, these devices aren’t always accurate. In many cases, they may record higher readings compared to the actual level of alcohol in your system. To add to this, everyone’s body processes alcohol differently and at an independent rat.

This is why you should also consume less than you think is appropriate. Stick to as few drinks as possible and alternate these with plenty of non-alcoholic drinks as possible.

Have a Designated Driver

This is a pretty common arrangement where a few people at a party or gathering will choose one or more drivers to drop them off at the end of the night. Now, this isn’t the most fun job to have, so it is important for you to take turns if you hang out with the same group of friends over and over.

Also, make sure that the rest of you moderate your drinking so that you have a good time, but that you don’t go overboard. After all, your sober friend shouldn’t have to take care of you while dropping you off at home as well.

Have an Alternative Plan

As mentioned, designated driver isn’t the most desired role. Therefore, it is often a good idea to have another plan in place. One thing that you can do is see if some of you can stay at your host’s house or a home that is within walking distance of where you are parking.

Of course, these days, rideshare trips are readily available. Travel as a group and split the fare between each person of the group. This way, you can get home without hassle and will not have to spend as much money in the process as well.

Know Who to Call

Of course, mistakes are inevitable and it is possible that you may get pulled over despite your best efforts. This is why you should have the name and number of a DUI lawyer near you as they can advise you on the process and let you know what to do next.

Having an attorney on your side may actually help you to get the charges against you dismissed. In doing so, you may not face any consequences at all. At the very least, you will not have to deal with a punishment that is as severe.

These are the main guidelines to follow to avoid a DUI charge or conviction. Stick to these and you should be able to give yourself a fighting chance.
