The Very Best Movies to Watch on Netflix Canada

netflix canada

Netflix is an endless treasure trough of movies. There is no question that the collection of movies available on Netflix is massive. However, sometimes the sheer size of the collection can be very overwhelming for the user. So if you are a subscriber of Netflix from Canada and can’t decide which all movies you need to watch, this list of movies is going to be of great help.

These are the best movies to watch on Netflix Canada:

End of Watch (2012)

First off, you need to remember that this movie’s writer also wrote Training Day. And he must’ve gone for joint training camps between the Taliban and Mexican Cartels since Training Day. What else can explain such a tense and unpredictable script? However, End of Watch packs a lot more than just that. The movie’s tone is very warm and sweet. It also serves as an excellent showcase of Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña’s phenomenal acting chops. The documentary-style cinematography, and the actors’ 5-month immersion program with actual LA cops, makes the movie very rich, authentic and exciting.

End of Watch is definitely one of the best movies on Netflix Canada. It stars Anna Kendrick, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña. It’s extremely enjoyable if you’re in the mood for something dramatic, intense, mind-blowing, powerful, raw, sincere, tear-jerker, thrilling, true-crime, well-acted.

Room (2015)

This incredible movie is an exploration of the complexities of the relationship between a mother and son. The movie is uplifting, disturbing, provocative, sad, and hopeful at the same time. It indeed is a roller coaster of emotions. We don’t get many of those middle-class-budget films anymore, and this one could be the category’s best. A kidnapped girl (Brie Larson) has a son (Jacob Tremblay in an electrifying performance) with her abductor and tries to provide a “normal” environment for the kid in the room where they’re being held captive. It goes on until they plan to escape. This is the movie that won Brie Larson her Oscar Award for Best Actress. One of the best movies to watch on Netflix Canada.

On Body and Soul (2017)

On Body and Soul is the proud winner of the 2017 Berlin festival .

Two strangers have a similar dream every night nightly, they meet as deer within the confines of a forest and eventually fall in love . When they run into one another in the real world, they look for the love that they experience unconsciously. The reality of their introverted personalities and their surroundings make it hard to build that same connection.

This unconventional love story is passionately told by Hungary’s best director, Ildikó Enyedi. Before it, she had taken an 18-year break from making movies, it’s quite evident when you watch On Body and Soul. That break was probably the main reason behind the fact that she came up with something as thoughtful and artistic as this.

McQueen (2018)

An intimate view into the rich yet short lifetime of Alexander McQueen, a British fashion icon. McQueen’s life story and his tormented genius transcends eras. He was a celebrity in everybody’s eyes except his own.

This is the sort of movie where after you watch it, you would like an honest hour of Wikipedia searches and Youtube interview viewing. It’s powerful and will introduce you to an entire world that was impacted by Alexander McQueen.

Blackfish (2013)

This incredible documentary focuses around the behaviour of captive Orcas (Killer Whales) and their treatment in marine theme parks across the globe. At the center of the story is Tilikum, a bull Orca that has been responsible for the death of three individuals, and the legal and ethical challenges that have arisen from apparent cover-ups by officials. What happened to Tilikum to form him adopt such behavior? The documentary features first-hand accounts by former whale trainers. It also features experts delivering fascinating truths about Tilikum and the Orcas as a species in general. The documentary also pays particular attention to the Orcas’ remarkable intelligence and advanced social behaviors. Blackfish is bound to change your perspective on whale captivity for good. It’s a must watch for every fan of high quality documentaries.

St. Vincent (2014)

Bill Murray plays an aged, dispirited war veteran named Vincent in this war comedy/drama flick. Murray’s character openly disdains most of the people he comes in contact with and provides little attention to anything beyond alcohol and racing . Living a lifetime of solitude in Brooklyn, everything takes a drastic turn when a young single mother (Melissa McCarthy) and her son Oliver move in nearby. Vincent eventually agrees to babysit Oliver while Maggie goes to work. Murray nails his unpleasant character very well. Through the course of the movie, his relationship with Oliver evolves despite his own misgivings. It provides young Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher) with the fatherly/grandfatherly figure that he really needs in his life. The movie is slightly formulaic, but it exceeds expectations with the help of great dialogue, favourable performances from all of the leads, and an unbelievably touching finale which can melt even the coldest of hearts. Definitely one of the best movies to watch on Netflix Canada.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009)

This is the original Swedish classic that was remade by David Fincher. This is the original story of a man of means who hires a journalist and scrappy hacker to solver a murder. It’s definitely a better version than the remake. This version pays more attention to detail and pace than the remake. In staging, aesthetics are given as much importance as thrills. And in the story, intelligence wins over plot. This gives the most character of Lisbeth Salander (played by Noomi Rapace) better space to deploy her full mysticism and enigmatic nature. Danish director Niels Arden Oplev masterfully brings everything together to form for a movie which will forever be remembered. Definitely one of the best movies on Netflix Canada.

Flipped (2010)

A seven year old Bryce (Callan McAuliffe) moves to a replacement neighbourhood across the road from a really spirited young girl named Juli (Madeline Carroll). She falls in love with him at first sight, much to the dismay of the shy young lad. For the following six years, Juli overwhelms Bryce with her affections until a series of events and misunderstandings leaves her heartbroken and angry at him. Fed up, Juli begins to ignore him. However, her absence triggers a change of heart as Bryce realizes his fondness of her. He decides that he will do anything to win her back. The whole film, set within the late fifties holds the heart and charm of village living. The phenomenal young cast brings an incredible amount of passion and playfulness on screen. Based on the novel by Wendelin Van Draanen, this endearing story of young love, will make your heart melt.

Sicario (2015)

This movie is an example of a great movie that sort of flew under the radar. In case you are blissfully unaware of this awesome movie, stay away from the trailer and just watch the whole damn thing. Kate (Emily Blunt) is an FBI agent who is enlisted to aid in the war on drugs at the Mexican border. She then meets the mysterious Alejandro (Benicio del Toro), a quiet but extremely skilled secret agent working on the Mexican side. The reason you shouldn’t watch the trailer is that Sicario is far from a run of the mill crime action movie, which its marketing will lead you to believe. It’s gorgeously made, with scenes which will make you hold your breath, ranging from the colour composition to the amazing performances by Blunt and Del Toro. It’s intense, intelligent and incredibly realistic in its approach to action sequences. A must watch on Netflix Canada.

Lion (2016)

Lion is the multiple award-winning movie based on the true story of a kid in India who gets lost in a train and suddenly finds himself thousands of kilometers away from home. 25 years after an Australian couple adopts him, the kid starts a journey stretched across thousands of kilometres and two distant continents to reconnect with his biological family. Dev Patel plays Saroo, and Nicole Kidman plays his Australian adoptive mother. Both the actors deliver mesmerizing performances which will win you over. The film has its fair share of tear-jerking moments and pure joy. An uplifting, meaningful, and beautiful movie to watch on Netflix Canada.

Train to Busan (2016)

A zombie virus breaks out and catches up with a father as he’s taking his daughter from Seoul to Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city. Watch them trying to survive on the way to their destination, a purported safe zone.

With expertly choreographed set pieces and excellent acting, Train to Busan is quite immersive. You’ll care about the characters. You’ll pity the father as he struggles to stay his humanity within the bleakest of scenarios.

It’s a refreshingly thrilling disaster movie, an ideal specimen of the genre and one of the best movies on Netflix Canada.

Logan Lucky (2017)

Two brothers played by Channing Tatum and Adam Driver decide to rob a local NASCAR event, the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina.

They put together a team to assist them, with Daniel Craig who is the demolition expert and Katie Holmes who is an ace getaway driver. Seth MacFarlane, Hillary Swank and Steven Soderbergh are some other big names associated with this movie.

The main characters are cheerful and just goofy enough to be completely unpredictable. Their heist is as chaotic because it is random, which inevitably results in many funny moments. The performances by the entire cast are amazing. Also, Daniel Craig is nearly unrecognizable in this movie.

The Death of Stalin (2017)

This hilarious political comedy stars Steve Buscemi in the titular role. Set within the last days before Stalin’s death and therefore the chaos that followed, it portrays the shortage of trust and therefore the random assassinations that characterized the Stalinist Soviet Union . Think of it as Veep meets Sacha Baron Cohen’s The Dictator. The movie is packed with jokes that are really smart, but what’s actually funny is the atmosphere and absurd situations that end up developing. One of the best movies to watch on Netflix Canada.
